Epicurus died in 270 or 271 BCE at the age of 76. In his final days, he was afflicted with either strangury or a gallstone. Despite the intense pain of his symptoms, he bore his illness with equanimity, evidenced by the cheerful letters he wrote, which are preserved by Philodemus and Cicero:
