Sir Isaac Newton, (4 January 1643 – 31 March 1727) was an English mathematician, astronomer, natural philosopher, and alchemist, regarded by many as the greatest figure in the history of science.

Newton received influence from the writings of Pierre Gassendi. Newton's concept of "absolute space" has much in common with Epicurean conception of the void as an "intangible substance."
