This Saying is the natural corollary of Principal Doctrine 1: since the gods are entirely uninvolved in our lives, it is in vain that we ask them for things that we can easily provide for ourselves.
[Some commentators suggest that this text may be an excerpt from a larger treatise on (and obviously against) the powers of prayer, which suggestion may very well be true, if yet unproven; nevertheless, this Saying is also a perfectly self-standing aphorism, complete in its simple, distilled, direct message.]
