Wealth

Epicurus certainly did not encourage his followers to pursue, less yet to amass wealth, as the term was understood by his (or our own) time's popular culture. One of his better known aphorisms was that, for one to be wealthier, one did not require more or greater means, but fewer and smaller desires.

This revisionary understanding of wealth relates closely to Epicurus' classification of the desires, and lies at the core of his notion of self-sufficiency.
