Weather

While Epicurus and his followers discussed matters pertaining to the weather and various other meteorological phenomena (e.g. eclipses of the sun or moon) at considerable length, the primary point they sought to make was that such phenomena are definitely not caused by divine intervention. Freed from such popular misconceptions, they argued, one could go on living without fear that the gods might "punish" one or "impede" one's plans by inclement weather, unexpected turns from fair to foul, or extraordinary meteorological events.

Epicurus also argued that humans can know that this is so definitively, by relying on their senses and their rational ability to examine the information thus sensorially collected.
