Pierre Gassendi (January 22, 1592 - October 24, 1655) was a French philosopher, scientist, astronomer and mathematician, best known for attempting to reconcile Epicurean atomism with Christianity. In posterity, the attempt cannot be considered successful, but by virtue of the exercise, Gassendi made the previously cryptic tenets of Epicureanism widely accessible to a new generation of intellectuals (e.g., Locke, Hume, and Newton), and, indirectly, to the public at large.
